Smarter Reality, a cloud-first organization that builds simulation and AI-enabled software for the Defense Industrial Base (DIB), needed to formalize its CMMC Level 2 posture to meet requirements tied to its work handling Controlled Unclassified Information (CUI). The organization had already implemented strong cybersecurity practices aligned with NIST SP 800-171, the work ahead was turning those technical controls into a documented, evidence-backed compliance program a Certified Third Party Assessment Organization (C3PAO) could assess.

Defining the Assessment Boundary

The first phase established a precise CMMC assessment boundary by identifying in-scope systems, cloud services, users, identities, and CUI data flows. For Smarter Reality, this meant clearly separating the cloud-based enclave from the broader corporate environment, defining the cloud resources and security services included in scope, identifying the limited number of authorized users, and documenting how CUI would enter, be processed within, and leave the enclave.

Special attention was given to documenting inherited controls and shared responsibilities within the enclave architecture, reducing ambiguity before documentation efforts began. This mapping and responsibility allocation is an extremely important step in the preparation phase.
