Challenge: Building a robust security posture from the ground up
OutboundSync seamlessly integrates new sales and marketing tools into its customers’ CRM systems. Working remotely, the company empowers revenue teams to adopt the latest outbound tools and integrate that data into where they do most of their work.
Because OutboundSync’s platform processes critical revenue data for its customers, it needs to prove to both customers and prospects that its security posture is resilient, trustworthy, and independently verified. It had already invested in Vanta, an industry-leading trust management platform, to manage its security program; now it needed to independently verify that its security posture is robust and aligned with industry standards. The next step was to select an auditor for their SOC 2 attestation.
“I didn’t quite realize at the time that when you pick a [GRC] platform you’re also picking a set of auditors that work with that platform”, said founder Harris Kenny. “There are a lot of firms out there that are just report mills. That wasn’t for us. If we were going to do SOC 2, we wanted to do it right—or not do it at all.”
Advantage Partners was one of the auditors recommended by Vanta. Through his due diligence Harris also learned that Clay, a well respected tool in the SaaS Sales space and OutboundSync partner, used Advantage Partners for their SOC 2 attestation, providing further credibility. “I felt like Advantage Partners would give us more hands-on help with understanding what it meant to actually build a security program that was good and that we could grow into as we grow as a company. That was the main reason why I went with Advantage Partners.”
It also helped that Advantage Partners’ willingness to be flexible in structuring their payments, making it easier for OutboundSync to invest upfront in their security posture while continuing to close deals during the process.
Solution: Moving beyond just “checkbox security”
Advantage Partners jumped straight into building OutboundSync’s security foundation. This started with a comprehensive review of their Vanta implementation, the associated control environment and the relevant activities for their people, processes and technology. This created strong alignment between the parties and gave OutboundSync confidence that the engagement was setup for success
After determining where the company stood in its Vanta implementation, Advantage Partners offered clarity on where there were data and tool gaps, providing simple explanations for complex requirements. They also shared tangible resources with OutboundSync’s team that further helped to clarify specific requirements.
For start-ups like OutboundSync, understanding “audit speak” can be daunting, particularly when future revenue counts on getting compliance right. Advantage Partners’ capably translated what was required into language that OutboundSync’s team could understand and act on. “When it comes to SOC 2 programs, security conscious people sometimes say ‘Well, it’s just checkbox security. You can get this attestation or this report, but you don’t really have a good security posture,’ said Kenny. “I’ve talked to other companies who have done it the cheap and fast way and they have gotten rejected in security reviews – just because you say you have SOC 2 compliance doesn’t mean that they’re comfortable with your security program.”
“Throughout the entirety of the audit process, we take a thorough approach to reviewing our client’s processes and the applicability to the respective framework,” said Advantage Partners’ co-founder Andrew Gulrajani. “We recognize it is our responsibility to deliver a high quality service that will meet our client’s stakeholder expectations.”
Results: A SOC 2 that stands up to scrutiny and wins new business
After an accelerated reporting phase, OutBoundSync received their issued report – based on an agreed upon timeline – on time & on schedule. They were pleased to find that they were able to close more deals even before completing the audit process. “Just having an engagement letter and Vanta trust center in place helped move prospects forward,” said Kenny. As soon as we even announced that we were doing a security program and we’re going to be putting a SOC 2 in place, we were able to close more deals.
Equally as important, OutboundSync now enters security reviews with confidence that their SOC 2 report stands up to scrutiny. The Advantage Partners team has also helped them lay a strong foundation for their security posture, not just a check box report. And the team has plans to invest further in its security program in the years to come.
“We felt vindicated. Our SOC 2 report isn’t just paper—it’s real. And when a CISO puts it under the microscope, we know we’re solid,” said Kenny. “Working with Advantage Partners was a game-changer for us. We weren’t interested in checkbox compliance—we wanted to build a real security program we could grow into. From start to finish, the Advantage team delivered hands-on guidance, clarity where Vanta left gaps, and flexibility that supported our growth. They took the process seriously, and thanks to them, our SOC 2 report holds real weight in security reviews. I’d choose them again in a heartbeat.”
